The nearest place of all for a 'StopOver'! This ancient sea port
is full of interesting places to visit. Its main feature is the
Place Du Soldat-Inconnu with the famous Rodin sculpture of the Burghers
of Calais and there is also the local museum with its paintings
and Europe's best collection of lace. It is a popular seaside resort
with golden stretches of sandy beach. Calais has some really tempting
boutiques in the Rue Royale, two giant hypermarkets and restaurants
and cafés galore. Plus open air markets at Place d'Armes on Wednesday
and Saturday mornings and at Place Crèvecoeur on Thursday and Saturday
mornings.
