WINE UNCORKED AS CROSS CHANNEL FAVOURITE

As cross channel shopping continues to be a major motivator to travel, wine sales have emerged as the number one favourite purchase according to the latest research from high speed car ferry operator, Hoverspeed.

In a recent survey, wine sales on the company's key short sea cross channel routes were shown to represent 65% of all customer purchases throughout its Continental terminal shops and on board its fleet of high speed craft. The remaining 35% of purchases is split between beer, spirits, tobacco and perfume.

Cheaper prices being the prime motivation for shopping abroad was also reflected in the research, with 70% of passengers confirming that they intended to shop whilst crossing to the Continent.

The trend in Hoverspeed's wine business also supports a recent report, published by AC Neilsen, that French wine does not feature in the top ten most popular brands consumed by the British. Included in Hoverspeed's current top ten best sellers are New World wines such as Ernest and Julio Gallo (California), Lindemanns, Jacob's Creek and Nottage Hill (Australia).

Capitalising on the growth of wine purchasing amongst cross channel customers, Hoverspeed has just launched a new publication 'Your Guide to Wine'. The 24 page guide offers valuable advice and prices - starting from just 99p a bottle - of its wine range available on board its high speed craft and in its Continental terminal shops in Calais, Ostend and Dieppe.

Features in the guide include "Raise a Glass" to suit every occasion, "Drinks Divine", and "If you like this…. you'll love these". Hoverspeed also provides a pre-ordering service, Select & Collect and on line shopping via hoverstore.co.uk

Note : Hoverspeed carries over 3 million passengers annually on its cross channel routes Dover - Calais, Dover - Ostend and Newhaven - Dieppe.
